How we got here

The story of two people who believed wellness could feel different — and built a home to prove it.

Dr. Michele Tkacz DNP's path

I spent years working in nutritional psychiatry, helping clients understand the connection between what they ate and how they felt. The work was meaningful, but I kept running into the same wall: people needed more than dietary changes. They needed their nervous systems to settle. They needed sleep. They needed their bodies to remember what safety felt like.

I started researching modalities that could support the body's natural healing capacity — red light therapy, PEMF, ozone therapy. The science was compelling, but the delivery systems felt wrong. Clinical settings that increased anxiety. Spa environments that prioritized aesthetics over efficacy. Wellness centers that felt more like sales floors than sanctuaries.

I wanted to create something different: a space where clinical rigor met genuine care. Where you could access advanced technology without sacrificing warmth. Where the container itself — the environment, the hospitality, the lack of pressure — was part of the healing.

That vision led me to Rocky, to Fells Point, and to this house. It's become the practice I always wanted to offer but couldn't find a model for.

Rocky's philosophy

My background is in bodywork and hospitality — two fields that taught me the same lesson: how you make someone feel matters as much as what you do for them. A skilled massage means nothing if the client feels rushed. A beautiful meal falls flat if the service is cold.

I've worked in high-end spas and boutique hotels, and I've seen how easily "wellness" becomes transactional. Upsells disguised as care. Packages designed to maximize revenue. Staff trained to follow scripts instead of reading the room.

When Michele and I started talking about creating a retreat space, I knew the hospitality piece had to be different. No sales tactics. No pressure to book the next session before you've finished the current one. No pretense — just genuine welcome.

Why we bought the house

We looked at commercial spaces first. Clean, professional, easy to zone for business use. But they all felt wrong — too sterile, too impersonal, too much like every other wellness center we'd walked into.

Then our realtor suggested we look at residential properties in Fells Point. We were skeptical. A house? For a wellness practice? But the moment we walked into 1525 Aliceanna Street, we understood.

The bones were perfect — high ceilings, original hardwood, enough rooms to create distinct spaces for different modalities. But more than that, it felt like a home. Light poured through the windows. The neighborhood hummed with life just outside. You could hear the water a few blocks away.

So we bought the house. We renovated carefully, preserving the character while installing the infrastructure for HOCATT, red light panels, sound beds, and all the modalities we wanted to offer. We created a guest suite for overnight stays. We built a reading nook. We planted herbs in the front garden.

It's not a clinic. It's not a spa. It's a home that happens to house some of the most advanced wellness technology available — and that combination is exactly what we set out to create.

Home as sanctuary

We believe your body knows how to heal when given the right conditions. Our job isn't to fix you — it's to create a container where your nervous system can settle, your cells can regenerate, and you can remember what rest actually feels like.

That container includes the modalities we offer, yes. But it also includes the warmth of genuine hospitality, the absence of sales pressure, the feeling of being welcomed into a home rather than processed through a system.

This is the practice we wanted to find for ourselves. We're grateful to share it with you.
